Student Spotlights: Celebrating Musical Journeys at Lake Norman Music School

Hi! My name is Caroline Boxman. I just turned eleven and recently graduated from fifth grade at Catawba Springs Elementary School. I live with my parents and my twin brother, Adam. My journey with music started a little differently than most – I was not the one taking lessons at first. I was just the sister who tagged along to watch my brother’s guitar lessons with Michael Luce at Lake Norman Music School.

But after sitting in on a few of Adam’s lessons, I knew I wanted in. Some might say I am stubborn, but I just know what I want. And I knew I wanted Michael to be my teacher too.

I have now been taking guitar lessons with Michael for over two years. He is patient, kind, and funny, and he has taught me so much about music. Thanks to him, I have discovered new genres of music I enjoy listening to and even playing on my guitar. I can now go from listening to my favorite Christian and Country music artists to some rock and alternative thanks to Michael (and my dad too).

Speaking of guitars, I am also left-handed. When I first started, I insisted on using a left-handed guitar, even though most of the instructors warned me it could make things more difficult. Left-handed guitars are harder to find and not as easy to borrow. But my parents supported me and got me a beautiful left-handed acoustic guitar.

A few months into lessons, though, I wanted to try one of the cool electric guitars at Lake Norman Music School—which were right-handed. Switching between both styles was confusing, so I made a big decision: I switched to playing right-handed. Now that same beautiful guitar is restrung as right-handed guitar and part of my journey! Michael taught me how to restring my guitar, so now I can do it with just a little help.

Michael has always encouraged me to perform and practice. And he can tell when I have been practicing—and when I have not! My first performance was at my school’s talent show, just a few months after I started playing. My brother, Adam and I performed Hedwig’s

Theme from Harry Potter, and it was a hit! Since then, I have performed on stage many times at school, at Lake Norman Music School recitals, and even at Lake Norman Brewery with other students.

I do not know exactly where guitar will take me, but I love learning new songs and stepping out of my comfort zone. One of my best friends, Kylee, and I sometimes joke about starting a band—who knows?

Outside of school and guitar, you will find me riding my pink BMX bike or kicking around a soccer ball. I started BMX racing last year and fell in love with it. I love pending my weekends racing with friends and hanging out with my family. Soccer used to be my main sport, I could play any position from goalie to center, and although I have paused it for now to focus on racing, I still love it. And when I am not doing all that, you will catch me playing in the pool with Adam. Every week when I go into Lake Norman Music School, Michael always asks me about my soccer games and now my racing, so it is nice to know that he genuinely cares and takes an interest in my life.
